PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND PREMISES

Town Hall
Market Place       Tel: (013873) 80255
There have been substantial alterations to this building, externally and internally, the refurbishment was carried out with the needs of disabled people very much in mind.

The alterations have made all the ground floor main offices on one level, which now incorporates wide corridors leading to public exhibition rooms. The public service counter is now accessed immediately on entry.

Concrete ramps have been built externally into both sides of the main entrance to accommodate wheelchairs and immediately to the front of the building there are two disabled parking bays that are clearly defined.

The pavement kerb has been reduced to ground level situated in front and between the disabled parking bays which allows wheelchairs easy and safe access.

RADAR keys can be purchased here.

Post Office
Market Place       Tel: (013873) 80260
The Post Office can only be entered by the main entrance which has 2 x 5" steps from ground level up to the internal floor level, impossible for wheelchair users to access and hazardous for those with walking difficulties.

Access into the service area is gained via a push-pull heavy wooden door.

Public Lending Library
Charles Street      Tel: (013873) 80040
The Public Lending Library is situated at the bottom of Charles Street on the left side. There is one Disabled Parking bay in the adjoining car park directly in front of the Community Centre entrance. There is another Disabled Parking bay to the right of the entrance to the Langholm Day Centre which faces the Community Centre and adjoins the library building. Access to library is gained via a concrete ramp that has handrails built-in.

The library area is not spacious but does provide aisles that are wide enough to allow wheelchairs access throughout. There are also several chairs placed around the library.

*** WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE ***

Thomas Telford Reference Library
Town Hall Building
Access to library is gained via double doors situated on the south wall of the Town Hall building looking toward Sir Pulteney Malcolm's marble statue. At the north end of the entrance corridor, a pull door to the right must be opened, then turn to the right where two flights of stairs are to be negotiated to access the library rooms.

Langholm Health Centre
Charles Street       Tel: (013873) 80355
            after hours Tel: (013873) 80212
Access to the Health Centre is gained via an enclosed concrete ramp which leads to the entrance door. This door is of the push-pull type which has a strong spring to push or pull against. Once inside the doors have standard operating no-resistance type. An unassisted individual in a wheelchair would have great difficulty in pushing the outer door open. The same would apply on the return route when exiting the building.

Dentist's Surgery
Lairds Entry          Tel: (013873) 80521
The surgery is located in the Lairds Entry approximately 50 yards from the High Street, down the north side of the Eskdale Hotel.
Access is difficult for wheelchair users owing to the two 6” steps going downwards. After the steps have been negotiated, a right hand turn has to be made in an area of 2ft. x 3ft. to gain entry into the waiting room. I have found through personal experience that it is best to negotiate the steps going in backwards with the assistance of two helpers.

Community Centre
Charles Street        Tel: (013873) 81289
The Community Centre, as the name implies is a centre where groups and individuals gather for their sporting and recreational activities.
Access to the premises is not ideal owing to a set of double spring doors that open only inwards and are strongly sprung. A wheelchair user would not be able to access all parts of the premises, a pity as most activities are carried out on the upper floor level which can only be accessed via a flight of stairs. There is a purpose-built unisex toilet located on the ground floor.
